General Requirements: Certification Programs in Special Education

Passing Professional Tests

All students are required to submit passing scores on the Praxis series tests from the Educational Testing Service for admission to practicum and application for certification. For details about required tests and passing scores, please contact sped@mail.wvu.edu.

Completing Clinical Experiences

ALL professional education programs leading to teaching certification require students to complete a series of clinical experiences that allow them to experience the real-world settings of special education and disability services in public schools or community agencies.

Graduate Programs in Special Education

Clinical experiences in the graduate certification programs in special education are completed in local schools or agencies in the student’s home community. Each student is responsible for securing permission to attend a local site that complies with requirements for the field experience associated with many courses and for securing a placement site and supervisor for the culminating practicum that meets eligibility criteria for a specific practicum option. For details about practicum options and applications, please review the Practicum Experiences page.

Doctoral Programs in Special Education

Clinical experiences in the two options in the doctoral program emphasis in special education are completed in colleges or universities (for personnel preparation option) or local, regional and state education agencies (for school leadership option) within West Virginia and the surrounding region. Faculty provide assistance to students in locating a site and supervisor appropriate for a specific course and compatible with their personal career interests.
